Advisory

Excessive Heat Watch

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the next few days. High temperatures in Moraga are forecast to reach 97 today, 104 on Friday and 100 on Saturday. They are forecast to be over 110 on Friday in the eastern portions of the county.

These high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for elderly or high risk residents or those engaged in strenuous activites. Please consider the following during this period of high heat:

** Stay hydrated at all times. If you are thirsty, you are falling behind. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages are not good options – drink water and/or juices.
** Wear appropriate clothing. Friday is probably not the best day for the heavy wool coat… Wear light-weight, loose fitting, light colored clothing.
** DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN OR ANIMALS IN UNATTENDED VEHICLES. The interior temperatures in a vehicle during a 95 degree day can rise to 130 degrees in less than 30 minutes. This is deadly to your child or pet!
** If pets are outside, ensure they have plenty of water to drink and have a shady place to rest.
** During this heat, you should work smarter and avoid strenuous outside activities. Reschedule these tasks or activities for early in the morning or later in the evening, when it is cooler.
** There is an increased fire danger with the high heat. Avoid outside fires and using power tools around dry grass and brush. Discard cigarettes only in approved containers.

The Moraga Library, which is air conditioned, will be open today until 8:00 pm, Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. The library is a great place to escape the heat and enjoy a book or a fun library program. Both the Lafayette and Orinda Libraries are also open.

If you are suffering from a heat-related emergency or need emergency assistance, please call 9-1-1. For non-emergency assistance, please call Dispatch at 925-284-5010.

Thank you for helping us to keep Moraga safe.
