KFD: NWS Juneau is monitoring a potentially impactful weather system set to affect SE Alaska late Sunday into Monday.

The National Weather Service in Juneau is monitoring a potentially impactful weather system set to affect SE Alaska late Sunday into Monday.

Rainfall from the last two days along with periodic rain/showers expected this weekend will keep the ground saturated across Southeast Alaska and keep water levels for rivers and streams elevated. Tropical moisture from former Typhoon Banyan is expected to move into the eastern Gulf of Alaska on Sunday and into the Panhandle Sunday night into Monday. Some gusty winds may accompany frontal bands through this time-frame and may affect marine operations. Current indications are for the associated low center to remain in the gulf through Tuesday and keep SE wet. The actual track of the system may vary over the next 24-48 hours; therefore, the location of greatest rainfall may also be adjusted. Southeast Alaska should expect up to another 2 inches of rain through Sunday afternoon, then another 1-4 inches Sunday night through Tuesday.

Some potential impacts to watch for include:

  •          Rises on local rivers/creeks, particularly quickly responding ones
  •          Ponding of water on roadways, poor drainage areas
  •          Swamping of boats
  •          Impacts to water treatment facilities
