Advisory

Car Plunges Off Rt 1 into Retention Pond After Crash. Strong storms possible later.

Car Crash Sends Vehicle Off Rt 1 Pond

At 8:30am Friday morning, Stephanie Trent age 42 of Somerset, NJ was driving a 2013 Honda Accord south on Route 1 near Route 522. Trent swerved to avoid a collision in front of her and ran off the highway. Trent exited the shoulder of the road, crashed into a fence, and landed 20 feet down in a retention pond in front of the Central Jersey Islamic Center. The car was submerged in 8 feet of water. A motorist who was involved in the first crash Edgor Yudkin of Jersey City jumped into the pond and swam to assist Trent getting out of the vehicle. Trent was transported by South Brunswick EMS to St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of minor injuries.

Traffic was limited to one lane of travel for approximately 30 minutes as a result of the crash. It took Georges Towing two hours to remove the vehicle from the pond.

WEATHER ALERT

WEATHER THREAT: Flooding & Severe Weather Possible Late Afternoon-Eve
TIME PERIOD: 4 - 10 PM Today

A bit cloudy with some patchy drizzle/mist currently in place across the area. Regardless, there should be some drier time for the afternoon and there may be a few breaks of sun. Due to these breaks, this could fuel the energy for embedded strong-severe storms as a line arrives from the west from 4 - 6 PM. The atmosphere is ripe with moisture, so 1.5-2.5"/hr rates are easily in the realm of possibility, which would cause poor drainage/roadway flooding and even the threat for stream & creek flash flooding, especially across northern Middlesex County. Of the severe weather threats, damaging winds of 40 - 60 mph would be the main concern in a strong-severe storm, with isolated small-medium sized hail & a rogue tornado not ruled out.

SEVERE WEATHER DAMAGING WINDS MODERATE
- 40-60 mph wind gusts in strongest storms/downpours

HAIL THREAT LOW
- While upper-level temperatures are not conducive, the excessive amount of energy available to these storms could promote hail development

LIGHTNING FREQUENCY HIGH
 - Any storm will be capable of producing occasional-frequent lightning

FLOODING ROAD / POOR DRAINAGE HIGH
- 1.5-2.5"+/hour rainfall rates possible; while the storms themselves should move quickly, multiple storms along the front will cause training & heavy rain concerns
