Update on Canyon Road Bridge Project

The Canyon Road Bridge continues to be closed to all traffic - please use alternate routes. The Town will continue to keep the public informed with updates posted on the Town’s Canyon Road Bridge webpage and disseminated via Nixle, NextDoor and About Town. Thank you for your continued patience.

Emergency Relief Funding Status
On June 14, 2017, the Town Council approved a budget and an action plan to remove the existing damaged Canyon Road Bridge, design new bridge abutments and install a pre-fabricated one-lane truss bridge with an attached pedestrian walkway over the Moraga Creek. This will re-establish essential traffic along Canyon Road for emergency responders and the public. This one-lane bridge will be in use until a permanent two-lane bridge with pedestrian walkway can be built using funding from Caltrans Highway Bridge Program funds.
On July 24, 2017, Caltrans staff notified the Town of Moraga that the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Emergency Relief Program staff approved the Town’s Damage Assessment Form (DAF). The DAF itemizes what disaster damage has occurred and includes a preliminary $2.06 million cost estimate to implement the Town’s one-lane bridge plan. Now that FHWA has approved the DAF for the project, Town staff will begin submitting supporting documentation to Caltrans, who administers the project for FHWA, and for Caltrans to allocate a project budget for reimbursable costs.

Utilities Relocation Work Update
AT&T (telecommunications utility) is finishing their relocation of overhead utility lines that would have been in conflict with the construction of the temporary one-lane bridge. Sprint mobilized their equipment on site last week and began operations to install new fiber optic conduits approximately 30 feet underneath the Moraga Creek creekbed to relocate their lines from their attachment to the Canyon Road Bridge. Demolition of the existing bridge cannot begin until Sprint has completed their necessary work. Work is scheduled to occur Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except for any unplanned emergency work. Vehicular and pedestrian access between Canyon Road and Constance Place will remain open.
