Update on Sinkhole Repair/Culvert Replacement

The Town’s contractor, McGuire and Hester (MH), began mobilizing equipment, material and setting up security fencing around the project site on Monday, July 17th to repair an approximately 130-foot long section of the 96-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert within the Rheem Boulevard and Center Street Sinkhole. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-October, barring any significant utility or weather delays. To expedite and complete critical aspects of this repair project prior to the rainy season, the contractor has been granted extended working hours, Monday through Saturday from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Construction Update:
On Wednesday, July 19, MH closed down the roadway at the intersection of Rheem Boulevard and Center Street and set up an extensive detour route around the closure. During the past week, MH has been potholing to determine the exact location of underground utilities and meeting with the affected utility companies, including East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), Central Contra Costa Sanitary District, AT&T and Comcast.

Next week, MH will begin relocating utilities that are in conflict with the excavation work needed to replace the 24 foot deep storm drain culvert. After affected utilities have been relocated or stabilized, MH will begin drilling 40 foot deep holes to place 36 steel I-beams to brace the trench shoring to facilitate digging of the deep storm drain trench.
