Canyon Bridge Update

The Canyon Road Bridge continues to be closed to all traffic so please use alternate routes. The Town will continue to keep the public informed with updates posted on the Town’s Canyon Road Bridge website and disseminated via Nixle, NextDoor and About Town. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section will be added to the project website. Please submit any questions not addressed in the FAQ to [email protected]. Thank you for your patience.

Temporary Bridge Engineering Design Update
As directed by Town Council, a one-lane, 150-foot long, temporary bridge will be installed this year to provide access until a permanent replacement bridge is constructed, likely to occur in 2019. The bridge reopening is a very complex project requiring extensive environmental approvals from nine outside agencies to work within Moraga Creek, which is a natural habitat for multiple endangered species.

There are four major construction phases for the installation of the temporary bridge: 1) relocation of utilities; 2) removal of the current bridge that has suffered damage caused by the landslide 3) construction of roadway approaches to the temporary bridge, reinforced abutments and deep concrete pilings to protect against the landslide; and 4) installation of the temporary bridge and a one-way traffic control signal system. Project work is expected to begin the week of July 17, contingent on receiving the necessary environmental approvals.

The Bridge Team is currently reviewing the 90% submittal of the existing bridge demolition plans and 30% submittal of the temporary bridge installation plans with the goal to finalize these separate plan sets and bid the work out to contractor(s). The removal of the existing bridge is anticipated to be completed by early September 2017 and the temporary bridge opened to traffic by mid October 2017. Any delays in utility relocation or permitting process can directly impact the overall project schedule.

Utilities Relocation Work Update
AT&T and Sprint both have major utility lines that need to be relocated prior to removal of the bridge. AT&T is nearing completion of their overhead relocation work. On July 17, Sprint is scheduled to begin installing new conduits underneath the creek bed to relocate their lines from off the bridge. Sprint will be using the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method to expedite and complete their work within 4 weeks. Demolition of the existing bridge cannot begin until Sprint has completed their necessary work and any delays can directly impact the opening of the temporary bridge to traffic.
