The Town’s contractor, McGuire and Hester (Oakland), is tentatively scheduled to begin mobilization on the week of July 17 to repair approximately a 130-foot long section of the 96-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert within the Rheem Boulevard and Center Street Sinkhole. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-October, barring any significant utility or weather delays. To expedite and complete critical aspects of this storm drain repair project prior to the rainy season, the contractor has been granted extended working hours, Monday through Saturday from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. The deep underground culvert crosses multiple utilities that will either need to be replaced or stabilized during construction, requiring significant coordination with each affected agency.

The Rheem Boulevard and Center Street intersection will be completely closed to vehicular traffic during the project. Driveways to both commercial districts will provide access to all local businesses. Detours will be set up by the contractor to route traffic on Rheem Boulevard back to Glorietta Boulevard and traffic on Moraga Road to either Moraga Way or into Lafayette. The contractor will provide pedestrian access through the project site when physically possible.

Over the next few weeks, the contractor will continue to coordinate with affected utilities and provide the construction management consultants, Ghirardelli Associates, with required project submittals for review and approval.
