Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States with over nine million victims annually making one in four people a victim. Identity theft is when someone gains access to your personal information and account numbers, then assumes your identity and goes on a shopping spree. Many times it's an invisible crime that is only discovered after a routine credit check or by either a phone call or letter from a collection agency. Identity theft victims can spend a great deal of money and countless hours trying to clear up their records. Victims are unjustly harassed by debt collectors, denied credit or employment opportunities, and in some cases even lose their cars, or homes all while trying to straighten out the mess created by the thief.
Avoiding identity theft is not simple, but there are several common sense steps consumers can do to prevent being a victim:
Keep personal information in a safe place and avoid keeping important documents in easily accessible places such as in your car.
Don't give your social security numbers or account numbers over the phone to anyone who has called you, or to anyone you don't know. If the caller has your personal information, don't be afraid to ask how they got it.
Shred all documents that contain person information before putting them in the trash. Never toss out anything that has your social security number or personal information on it. 
Cancel paper billings and have your statement delivered on-line. Most banks and utility companies offer on-line bill paying services.
Review any paper billings that you receive and check for discrepancies.
Don't carry PIN's, passwords, or social security numbers in your wallet or purse.
Pick up your mail from your mailbox promptly and place outgoing mail with sensitive information in a secure mailbox.
