The Newark Police Department is releasing information about recent crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

July 1st

1109 Hours: Officers responded to an auto burglary in process at the Chase Suites Hotel, 39150 Cedar Boulevard. The suspect vehicle was located in the NewPark Mall parking lot where Officers contacted the suspects. A 39 year old Fremont male was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued a citation and released. A second suspect, a 45 year old San Jose male was arrested for attempted auto burglary, receiving stolen property and his outstanding warrants. The suspect was booked into the Fremont Jail.

2013 Hours: Officer Mavrakis responded to an illegal fireworks call on Elmwood and Darvon Streets. Officer Mavrakis was unable to identify a suspect; however the illegal fireworks were seized.

2303 Hours: Officers responded to a disturbance at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel, 34905 Newark Boulevard. Officers contacted and arrested 23 year old San Mateo male and a 26 year old Menlo Park male for obstructing a Police Officer, disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance and battery. Both suspects were booked into the Santa Rita Jail.

July 2nd

1552 Hours: While conducting a security check of the homeless encampment at 880 and Highway 84, Officer Herbert and Rivera contacted and arrested a 30 year old transient male for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. A second suspect, a 31 year old San Leandro male was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and his outstanding warrants. Both suspects were booked into the Fremont Jail.

1607 Hours: Officer Taylor responded to Macy’s NewPark Mall for a shoplifter in custody. An 18 year old Castro Valley male was issued a citation and released at the scene.

2309 Hours: Officer Arroyo responded to a disturbance on Reymouth Drive at Blackburn Drive. Officer Arroyo contacted and arrested a 29 year old Newark female for possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued a citation and released at the scene.

July 3rd

0832 Hours: While conducting a security check of the Newark Community Center Park, 35501 Cedar Boulevard, Officers Hunter, Johnson and Mapes contacted and arrested a 25 year old transient male for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle and probation violation. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

1852 Hours: Officer Wallace investigated a fraud case where an elderly victim was tricked into sending $5,400.00 dollars in gift cards to an unknown person in Georgia to pay the bail for his “Grandson” who was in jail for driving under the influence. This is a well-established scam that has been going around for some time. If you have elderly parents / friends, please discuss this with them and encourage them to talk to you or a trusted person before responding to these types of calls.

2020 Hours: Officer Wallace investigated a hit and run case that occurred on the 7300 block of Thornton Avenue.

2037 Hours: Officer Wang investigated a vehicle burglary at Nijo Castle, 39888 Balentine Drive. The loss is IPhone 6S.

0022 Hours: Officer Khairy arrested a 45 year old Newark male for possession of a controlled substance on Zulmida Avenue at Christine Street. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

July 4th

0706 Hours: Officers were dispatched to a reported robbery at Chevron gas station, 6104 Jarvis Avenue. The suspect had fled prior to police arrival. This incident is still under investigation.

1910 Hours: While conducting a probation check on Arrowhead Place, Officers Mapes and Slavazza contacted and arrested a 48 year old Newark male for possession of a controlled substance and illegal fireworks. The suspect was cited and released at the scene.

2245 Hours: Lieutenant Kimbrough and Sergeant Simon were flagged down by a group of citizens on Port Sailwood Drive. An 18 year old male suffered an injury to his hand when an illegal firework exploded. The patient was transported to a local trauma center with non-life threatening injuries.

2057 Hours: Officer Khairy responded to a hit-and-run collision in the parking lot of Home Depot, 5453 Thornton Avenue. The investigation is ongoing.

0305 Hours: Officer Wallace and Field Training Officer Norvell contacted and arrested a 36 year old Fremont male during a pedestrian stop on Cherry Street at Fountain Avenue for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and his outstanding warrants. The suspect was booked into the Fremont Jail.
