Fireworks Safety and July 4th Celebration Information

Our Department is making provisions for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday celebrations. Sheriff's station personnel will be patrolling the streets within their jurisdictions to discourage the use of illegal fireworks. During the course of patrolling, there may be a need to confiscate illegal fireworks, and conduct subsequent arrest of violators. Throughout these activities, we are requesting the assistance of our citizens to report illegal fireworks. Through our joint cooperative efforts with the Los Angeles County Fire, property loss and injuries associated with illegal fireworks can be minimized again this year.

Going to a professional fireworks show is truly the safest way to celebrate the Fourth of July. The following website has a list of show locations and schedules for 2017 fireworks shows in the Los Angeles County area.

Fireworks are classified as hazardous substances under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Illegal explosive type devices (M-80's, quarter sticks) and professional display fireworks, should never be handled by consumers due to serious injuries and death that can occur. Some cities, however, do permit "Safe and Sane" fireworks.

ILLEGAL PYROTECHNIC EXPLOSIVE TYPE DEVICES
Possession of illegal fireworks (e.g. firecrackers, bottle rockets) up to 100 lbs is a
misdemeanor (12700 (b)(1) H&S or 12700 (B)(2) H&S).
Possession of not less than 100lbs or more than 5000 lbs is a felony (12700 (b)(3) H&S).
