47 year old male placed on mental health evaluation hold after 3-hour standoff with police Sunday night.

On Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 7:48 p.m., the Fremont Police dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 report of a domestic disturbance and attempt suicide on the 5000 block of Buchanan Pl.  The caller stated an adult male had become physically violent with family members and attempted to harm himself.  The incident was reported approximately 20-30 minutes after it had occurred and the last person to see the male said he was armed with a knife.  Multiple officers were dispatched to the call and learned the male had left the residence and was now at a house on the 5000 block of Cleveland Pl.

Officers made contact with the male who was located hiding in the backyard.   They could see the male was holding a knife with a 12-16” blade to his throat.  The male was irate and refused to comply with demands to drop the knife.  As negotiations began, officers learned that prior to their arrival an assault with a deadly weapon had been committed at the residence on the 5000 block of Cleveland Pl.  The male had entered the home unannounced, grabbed a knife and got into an altercation with a resident.  During the altercation, a male victim was cut and his injuries required immediate medical attention. He was transported to a local hospital via ambulance where he was treated for his non-life threatening injury.

As it became dark, Fremont Fire responded with a UAS (drone) equipped with lights.  Due to unproductive negotiations, less than lethal pepper balls were deployed indirectly to the area of the suspect at approximately 9:50 p.m.  While giving a reaction to the pepper, he continued to refuse to drop the knife.  Negotiations continued but were slow.  At approximately 11:00 p.m. new negotiators came in and the suspect was responsive to the change.  At 11:05 p.m., the suspect dropped the knife.  At 11:08 p.m., the 47 year old male was safely detained without further incident.

Due to the suspect’s actions and statements, officers believed he was a danger to himself and others.  The 47 year old male was transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation and placed on a hold.  Charges for assault with a deadly weapon will be sought at a later time.
