All fireworks are illegal to sell or use in Hayward, officials remind residents as July 4th approaches

Independence Day revelers encouraged to attend sanctioned fireworks events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area

Hayward, Calif., June 26, 2017—Hayward officials are reminding residents that the sale or use of any and all types of fireworks in the city is illegal and violators are subject to citation and arrest.

“The Fourth of July is just around the corner—a time for barbecues, picnics, pool parties and parades. But fireworks? Not in Hayward,” said Fire Chief Garrett Contreras.

“Fireworks of any kind—including the so-called “Safe & Sane” varieties—are illegal to sell or to use in the City of Hayward and greater Fairview Fire Protection District served by Hayward Fire Department,” the Chief said.

Hayward is home to beautiful wildlands and open spaces where foliage has grown tall and thick following our wet winter—and those grasses and brush are turning tinder-dry as temperatures rise and daylight hours lengthen.

And our wildlands are not the only areas susceptible to an errant firecracker or bottle rocket. Urban areas are at risk, too. When houses, apartment complexes and other buildings are in close proximity, it creates potential for multiple, potentially catastrophic fires threatening property and loss of lives.

Each July 4th, thousands of people in the United States, most often children and teenagers, are hurt using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers, too few people appreciate the risks—including burns, eye damage and other injuries.
