Advisory

SCAMS & FRAUDS

Almost daily the police department receives calls regarding scam and fraud attempts.
The vast majority of residents recognize the calls and letters they receive for just what they are - scams.
As quickly as police agencies in the county alert residents to the most recent scam attempts, different ones appear.
The department was recently contacted by a woman reporting that her 80 year old mother who resides in West Cornwall Township was the victim of several scams that essentially wiped out her life savings. Over a period of two years, the elderly woman wire transferred money and sent cash to the scammers. As of today, she has lost in excess of $157,000.00 and the total will likely increase as the accounting process continues. She is facing bankruptcy and the loss of her home. All of the cash and wire transfers went out-of-state and it is too early to know if recovery of any funds is possible.
We cannot stress enough... do not wire money, send cash, or purchase pre-paid cash cards based on a call or letter you receive...because if you're asked to do that, you're being scammed.
