National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day

On Oct 1, 1962 President Kennedy signed into law designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department selected a few members from each division to represent the department in Washington D.C.   In October of 2016, in two separate incidents, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department lost two of their own, Sergeant Steve Owen and Sergeant Alfonso Lopez.  They are memorialized on the wall in Washington D.C.
