Press Release - May is National Bike Safety Month

The Newport Beach Police Department and the California Office of Traffic safety (OTS) encourage bicycle riders and motorists to share the road safety.  During the month of May, which is designated as National Bicycle Safety Month, we hope everyone will take special care to develop their skills as a “Roll Model” and help prevent collisions throughout the year.

For riders and drivers, being a “Roll Model” means actively decreasing the risks of traffic crashes, preventable injuries and deaths.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 818 bicyclists died and over 45,000 were injured in crashes in 2015, which shows a 12% increase in deaths from 2014.  Over the 10-year period from 2006 to 2015, the average age of cyclists killed in motor vehicle crashes increased from 41 to 45.  In 37% of all fatal bicyclist crashes in 2015, alcohol was involved (for either the vehicle driver or for the bicyclist).

“We are committed to keeping our streets safe for everyone who uses them,” says Sgt. Michael Schiavi.  “As the weather warms up, more people will be using our roads to enjoy their time in Newport Beach.  Whether a person cycles or drives, everyone should know about bicycle safety - now more than ever.”

California has the “Move Over Law” to share the road, requiring motorists to provide at least a three-foot cushion when passing bicycle riders.  Whether you are on two wheels, or on four, traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Tips to be a “Roll Model”:

  • Ride and Drive Focused – Never ride or drive distracted.
  • Ride and Drive Prepared – Always expect the unexpected.
  • Safety First – Always wear a bicycle helmet when on a bicycle and a seat belt when in a vehicle.
  • Know the Rules of the Road – A bicyclist is considered a vehicle on the road, with all the rights and responsibilities of motorized traffic.
  • Share the Road – Both motorists and bicyclists should look out for each other and show mutual respect.
