Newark, California (Wednesday, April 12, 2017)

On April 8, 2017 at approximately 12:33 p.m., Newark Police Officers responded to a report of a man down in the parking lot of Grocery Outlet, located at 36601 Newark Blvd.

Upon arrival, officers located a male, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was declared deceased on scene. The victim has been identified as Roque Leonel Valencia, a 29-year-old male resident of Union City.

Newark Police Department Detectives are investigating the incident, which is not believed to be a random act, as a homicide.

Josue Jaime Perez, a 28-year-old male resident of Oakland, was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail on charges of Murder, 187 (a) PC, Murder Committed during the Commission of a Robbery, 190.2 (a)(17)(a) PC, and Using a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, 12022 (a)(1) PC. The first court appearance for this case was scheduled for April 11th at the Fremont Superior Court House.

Newark Police Department Detectives are continuing with the investigation as they seek out additional suspects. Further details are not available at this time.
