Per Oakland Public Works:

On Thursday evening two mudslides were reported to the Oakland Fire Dispatch Center – one in the 6500 block of Aitken Drive, and another nearby in the 6600 block of Aitken Drive. The Oakland Fire Department, Oakland Public Works, East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and PG&E all responded.

Aitken Drive was closed to traffic in both directions in these two blocks of Aitken Drive, and will remain closed until further notice. No driveway access to any home on Aitken Drive has been affected.

One of the slides continued downhill, into the backyards of four homes in the 6600 and 6700 blocks of Banning Drive. The mud reached up to 4-5 feet against the back walls of two of the homes, and to the roof eave of one of them. Mud also infiltrated into the homes via doors and windows. All four Banning Drive homes were evacuated by OFD, as was one home on Aitken Drive. Two residents were given housing assistance from Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

For safety, EBMUD and PG&E temporarily cut water and power service to some nearby lines.

City investigators checked adjacent properties to see if any additional homes were at risk. At this time no other homes are believed to be affected.

Engineers will continue assessing the mudslide sites today to determine next steps and the stability of the affected homes on Banning Drive.

Oakland Public Works will provide more information as work at this site continues.
