Jed Fisher Memorial Scholarship now available

Sheriff Tim Bottoms announced today that applications have been distributed to the three Gibson County high schools for the Jed Fisher Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship was established in memory of Deputy Jerry “Jed” Fisher. Deputy Fisher had been with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office for seven years working through the ranks as Reserve Deputy, Communications Officer, Corrections Officer and finally being appointed Deputy in December 1997. Deputy Fisher was appointed K-9 handler in 2001 and was in the process of completing his training with his K-9 partner, when he became ill and died on the morning of October 3, 2001.

Deputy Fisher’s name was added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC in 2008.

This year’s scholarship is awarded on behalf of the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, it’s employees, and friends and family of Deputy Jerry “Jed” Fisher. Deputy Fisher was an outstanding Deputy Sheriff whose dedication to his department and the profession of law enforcement will best be honored by providing a law enforcement officer of tomorrow with the opportunity to receive a college education. This education, which Deputy Fisher completed only five months prior to his death, will better prepare the future officer to serve their department, and the Citizens of Gibson County and to fulfill the mission that was only begun by Deputy Jerry “Jed” Fisher.

This is the 16th year for this scholarship. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior at one of the three Gibson County high schools and must be planning to attend and graduate from Vincennes University with a degree in law enforcement. This scholarship will be a $500 cash scholarship.

Applications are available in the High School Guidance Offices at Wood Memorial, Gibson Southern and Princeton Community High Schools and at the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office. The deadline for submitting applications is April 21, 2017.
