Deputy Coroner Michael Thomas and I enjoyed attending the 8th SC Circuit Law Enforcement Network (LEN) meeting today. We enjoyed catching up with a couple of old friends as well as meeting new ones.
Janice Cowen, the state coordinator for SC Operation Lifesaver, gave a great presentation on the importance of railroad crossing safety. Even though the numbers of railroad incidents are down they still occur.
Mrs Cowen, reported, in 2016 there were 48 crashes total; 18 injuries and three (3) fatalities. There were 12 trespassing incidents resulting in four (4) fatalities and eight (8) injuries.
Please remember it is important to be aware and adhere to all signage at railroad crossings especially ones that are unguarded.
