The Newark Police Department is releasing information about recent crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

March 20th

0928 Hours: Community Service Officer Verandes investigated the theft of a white Toyota Tacoma (Ca. License #7HIW584) from World Pac, 8638 Thornton Avenue.

1020 Hours: Officer Hogan contacted and arrested a 60 year old transient male on Thornton Avenue at Arden Street for his outstanding warrant. The suspect was booked into the Santa Rita Jail.

1223 Hours: Officers responded to Chase Suites Hotel, 39150 Cedar Boulevard for a reported strong-arm robbery. The investigation revealed that an 18 year old transient male had assaulted and robbed an elderly female victim of her purse in the Lion Center parking lot, 39175 Cedar Boulevard. Two Good Samaritan’s witnessed the robbery and chased the suspect across Cedar Boulevard on to the Chase Suites Hotel property where they were able to trip the fleeing suspect causing him to fall to the ground and drop the purse. One of the Good Samaritan’s held the suspect to the ground as officers arrived and the other Good Samaritan returned the purse to the victim. The suspect was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on charges of robbery, elder abuse, providing false information to a Police Officer and his outstanding warrant.

1252 Hours: While Officers were investigating the above listed robbery, Community Service Officer Verandes was flagged down at NewPark Mall (near Pole #9) regarding an attempted robbery of a victims cell phone that occurred inside Macy’s. Community Service Officer Verandes broadcasted a description of the suspects, vehicle, and direction of flight. Traffic Officer Allum observed a possible suspect vehicle exit the mall parking lot, towards Interstate 880. The vehicle was stopped and two subjects were contacted. The driver, a 30 year old El Cerrito female was arrested for robbery and driving without a license and subsequently booked into the Santa Rita Jail. The passenger, a 21 year old Richmond female was issued a citation for her outstanding warrant and released.

2021 Hours: Officer Mavrakis investigated an auto burglary at Campanella Restaurant, 34903 Newark Boulevard. The loss is a garment bag and its contents.

2024 Hours: Officer Geiser investigated an auto burglary at Burger King, 34943 Newark Boulevard. The loss is two lap top computers and purse left in plain view.

2116 Hours: Officer Smith investigated an auto burglary at Johnny’s Pub, 5810 Jarvis Avenue. The loss is a backpack, laptop and a passport.

0505 Hours: Officer Cervantes investigated an auto burglary on the 37000 block of Magnolia Street. The loss is unknown at this time.

0513 Hours: Officer Cervantes investigated an additional auto burglary on the 37000 block of Magnolia Street. The loss is clothes, electronics and a backpack.
