Advisory

PRESS RELEASE: Skeletal remains found in hillside area in Moraga. No apparent signs of foul play at this time.

On March 17, 2017, the Moraga Police Department, assisted by members of the Lafayette Police Department, recovered what appeared to be skeletal human remains in a secluded area near the Moraga/Lafayette border (between Rheem Blvd and S. Lucille Lane). The remains appeared to have been in the area for some time.

A hiker reported to Moraga Police that he had been hiking in the area, which is only accessible on foot or by 4-wheel drive vehicle, when he discovered the bones near a seasonal creek. The hiker led officers back to the area and assisted them in locating the remains.

Crime scene technicians, along with search and rescue personnel with dogs and metal detectors, recovered the remains and thoroughly searched the area. The remains will be transferred to the Contra Costa County Coroners Bureau for further investigation and determination of cause of death. Although the exact cause of death and the identity of the deceased person are unknown, there are no apparent signs of foul play at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to please contact Lieutenant Brian South at 925-888-7052 or via Dispatch at 925-284-5010.
