The DPW is fighting a complex storm. The roads that were plowed early yesterday quickly turned to a sheet of ice. Then we saw the heavy bands of snow pass through Mahwah in the mid-morning. The more these roads were plowed, the thicker the snow & ice layer accumulated. Both our DPW and Bergen County Road Department plows have been plowing our roads since late Monday night, and we will continue to scrape the roads as we speak. The sheer volume of snow and sleet that fell, along with plunging temperatures are the reason the roads across the county are in the condition they are in today. We have crews out scraping the roads as we speak. The real issue is that below 22 degrees salt has no effect on the roads. We are now applying a sand grit mixture which will help traction. Please be patient, our DPW is doing everything they can to clear these roads. Closing the Library, Township Schools and suspending Township Recycling, allows us to fully staff crews to clear the roads, as that is the most important issue of the day.
