Help Berkeley Police identify six individuals involved in fights between protesters and counter-protesters on March 4.

The Saturday demonstration and counter-demonstration drew various people who came armed with sticks, bats, shields, smoke canisters and other weapons, and they repeatedly inserted themselves into confrontations with those with opposing views. Fights typically lasted a few seconds and took place in the middle of the crowd, which included a number of observers, peaceful protesters and news media. 

Berkeley Police worked during the event to identify those committing violence, even when suspects’ actions amidst the cover of a crowd did not allow immediate apprehension.  When conditions best favored the safety of all involved, targeted arrests were made.  By the conclusion of the event, BPD arrested 10 individuals – both protesters and counter-protesters – for their roles in the violence and had recovered and gathered numerous weapons throughout the afternoon, further reducing potential violence.  (A photograph of the seized weapons is attached.)   

While no uninvolved bystanders, community members, or officers were injured; and no property was vandalized or destroyed, the ability of individuals to express their First Amendment Rights was hindered by these acts of violence.  The continuing pursuit of these suspects is part of the department strategy to bring all perpetrators into custody.  Any leads the public provides, including filing a police report if you were a victim, can help investigators identify these suspects and eventually to the successful prosecution of those who committed assaults Saturday afternoon.

The Berkeley Police Department will continue to work with the District Attorney’s Office as these investigations continue.
