Oakland Public Works Advisory: Thorndale Drive partial closure

Per Oakland Public Works: Mudslide forced partial road closure of Thorndale Drive b/w Jewel Court & Elverton Drive. Expected fully open this evening.

The City of Oakland has received hundreds of calls for service for flooding, fallen trees and other weather-related issues since the region’s record-breaking stormy weather began in early January. We are working around the clock to address them. As we continue this work it is also hugely important for Oakland’s residents and property owners to prepare and keep their property safe from weather impacts.

The City has made sandbag materials available free of charge to the public at two locations:

* The Municipal Service Center, 7101 Edgewater Drive, on weekdays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
* Drainage Services Facility, 5921 Shepherd Canyon, on weekdays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

However, SUPPLIES ARE CURRENTLY EXTREMELY LIMITED, and we encourage the community to consider finding the same supplies at a local hardware store, home improvement store, or landscape supply store. The City distributed more than 18,000 sandbags and many miles of plastic sheeting to protect public hillsides against potential slides. Our priority, as always, is to protect homeowner safety, property and the infrastructure.

Rain causes potholes; lots of rain can cause lots of potholes. We ask Oakland motorists and cyclists to be especially careful and keep an eye out for new potholes and other roadway damage in the coming weeks. Many of our roadway workers and resources have been focused on safety issues raised by the storms, and once we address them and the weather gets drier we will resume our focus on road repair. We are developing plans now to reallocate resources to quickly address the increased number of potholes. We will announce the details of that soon.

While our resources are finite and we cannot respond immediately to every call for service, having more information from the community helps us improve our planning to deploy those resources for the biggest and best impact. Please continue to report any issues to the Oakland Call Center, which you can reach at (510) 615-5566, www.oaklandpw.com, [email protected] or through the mobile app SeeClickFix. We are grateful for the public’s assistance, patience and understanding.

We want to make sure you have all the information and tools you need. Please take a look at this instructional video for sandbagging your property to prevent flooding. In the information posted just below the video, you will also find a link to more preparation and storm safety tips:
