Public Safety Tips in Anticipation of Civic Center Park Event
There is a rally and march scheduled to occur on Saturday, March 4 at 2:00pm in Civic Center Park. At this point, it remains unclear as to how many people will be in attendance or if the flow of traffic may become impeded. Demonstrations can be dynamic events, with the potential to transform from peaceful assemblies and expressions of First Amendment speech, to an event where some endeavor to commit acts of violence. Accordingly, the Berkeley Police Department is continually evaluating developments and planning for a number of contingencies.
For those who intend on coming to the event we offer the following public safety tips:
- If you witness a criminal act, move to somewhere safe, and report it to BPD.
- If you are calling to report an emergency from your cellphone, call (510) 981-5911. For non-emergency calls for service the BPD Communications Center can be reached at (510) 981-5900.
- Consider photographing and or filming the criminal activity and those involved only if you are at a safe distance. Criminals have attacked peaceful protesters capturing video or taking photographs. You can upload files from any device by clicking on http://bit.ly/berkvideo.
- Separate yourself and keep a significant distance from those engaging in illegal behavior, such as throwing rocks or bottles, vandalizing or looting.
