Press Release: Structure fire with occupants rescued on the 1000 block of Lafayette Street, Alameda

Saturday morning (02/25/2017), at 2:02 am, Alameda Fire responded to reports of a residential structure fire, with people trapped inside, on the 1000 block of Lafayette Street.  Arriving crews found smoke showing from a single story residence.

Alameda firefighters and police officers were able to rescue two trapped adult male occupants through bedroom windows.  Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and search for any additional trapped occupants.  The fire was extinguished at 2:32 am.

Both occupants were treated at the scene; one was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  There were no other reported injuries.

Fire damage was confined to the interior entry way with extension to the attic and basement.  There was heat and smoke damage throughout the building.  A total of 24 firefighters responded.

The cause of the fire was determined to be combustible items placed in close proximity of a floor furnace.  Displaced occupants are staying with family members.

Oakland Fire provided mutual aid to cover at vacant Alameda fire stations.  Other assisting agencies include the Alameda Building Department, Alameda Police, Alameda Power and P.G. & E.
