Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Gardena Police Department (GPD) officer-involved shooting that occurred at 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017.
 
Detectives have learned that at approximately 10:30 p.m., GPD officers were patrolling the 1000 block of West Rosecrans Avenue, Gardena, when they noticed a disturbance in the parking lot of the business.
 
The officers stopped to assist the security guard in quelling the disturbance between several patrons.  During the contact, one of the males fired at least one round in an unknown direction and fled westbound away from the parking lot.  
 
GPD officers attempted to apprehend the male suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred.  The suspect was struck at least once in the torso and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The suspect is described as a male Black adult.  
 
Officers recovered two handguns believed to belong to the suspect.
 
No officers were injured.
 
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.

SUSPECT:  2 Male Adults

UNIT:  Homicide Bureau – Lieutenant Mendoza

NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are assisting Gardena Police Department with an Officer-Involved Shooting investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at approximately 10:27 p.m. Investigators are responding to 14100 block of Van Buren Court, Gardena.

One male adult suspect was struck by officer gunfire, transported to a local hospital, and is in unknown condition. The second male adult suspect was taken into custody. He was not struck by gunfire.

No officers were injured in this incident.
