Armed Robbery
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – At 7:54 pm, Sunnyvale DPS officers responded to an armed robbery that occurred at the Verizon store located at 140 E. El Camino Real. Two suspects wearing masks entered the store. One suspect was armed with a handgun and the other suspect with a knife. The suspects forced the store employees to open the store safe and then tied them up. The employees were then locked in a bathroom. The suspects ransacked the store, taking dozens of cell phones and merchandise valued at approximately $64,300. The suspects fled in a vehicle. The employees were not injured.

Officers located the suspect vehicle in the area of Corte Madera and Costa Mesa Ter. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and short vehicle pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle was ultimately stopped in an apartment complex parking lot. The driver fled on foot and was immediately captured. The passenger attempted to flee on foot. An officer deployed his conductive energy device, apprehending the suspect. That suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment and released.

DPS personnel were assisted by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office air unit, patrol personnel, and Mountain View PD.

The handgun used in the robbery was located in the suspect vehicle. The handgun was reported stolen out of Nevada. All of the stolen property was recovered in the suspect vehicle. Investigators are determining whether these suspects are responsible for similar armed robberies in the Bay Area.

The suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for various charges, including Armed Robbery and Kidnapping. The two suspects have been identified as:

- John Bivins 03/28/1970
