Six Arrested in Carjacking, Residential Robbery Spree in La Puente/Rowland Heights Area

On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 9:12 p.m., Industry Station personnel responded to a residence in the 800 block of Greycliff Avenue, La Puente, regarding a “carjacking-just occurred” call.

The victim, a female Hispanic, stated she drove to her residence and was confronted just outside her home by multiple suspects, one of whom was armed with a baseball bat.  Threatening to retrieve a firearm if she refused to exit her vehicle, the victim, fearing for her life, relinquished her vehicle. The six suspects then rushed into her vehicle and drove away.

Moments later, Industry Station personnel located the suspect vehicle near the 60 freeway and Fullerton Road in the City of Industry.  Sheriff’s personnel pursued the vehicle east on the 60 freeway, and subsequently followed the vehicle by helicopter only, due to excessive speeds.

The suspect vehicle continued at excessive speeds, exited the freeway and then crashed at Euclid Avenue and Merrill Avenue in Chino.  All six suspects fled from the single vehicle collision, attempting to avoid apprehension.  With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Chino Police Department and Ontario Police Department, Industry Station personnel established a containment of the area and all six suspects were subsequently apprehended.

During the investigation, deputies located a second vehicle near the scene of the carjacking and recognized it fit the description of a suspect vehicle used in several recent robberies in the area.  The suspect vehicle having a Texas license plate, was subsequently confirmed as a vehicle reported stolen by Harris County Sheriff’s Department in Texas.  It is believed that the six suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle during the time of the carjacking.

Brian Mendez, a 20 year-old male national of El Salvador and Christian Lucero, an 18 year-old male national of Honduras, were arrested and booked at Industry Station for carjacking.  They are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each.  Both suspects reside in the Houston, Texas area.

The four others detained were two male and two female juveniles, also believed to reside in the Texas area.  They are nationals of El Salvador, Mexico and Honduras and are currently detained at a juvenile detention facility.

Although the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating the numerous recent robberies, detectives believe that the crimes are of opportunity and not racially motivated.

At this time, it is unknown if the two suspects and four juveniles are affiliated with any local gangs.

The booking photos are not being released at this time.

The sheriff’s department would like to remind the public to remain vigilant and if “you see something, say something.”
