PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT
Winter Weather Safety

For immediate release: 01/26/2017 5:00 p.m.

As our winter weather shifts from snow to rain and back again, the City would like to remind citizens of a few winter weather safety topics.

• As part of the City Building Snow Removal Plan revised in 2013, city crews will begin clearing snow from the roofs of the schools and other city-owned buildings on Monday. Snow amounts so far this winter are normal, and city roof clearing is a routine and precautionary procedure based upon snow load rating for individual city buildings.

• Citizens are reminded to remain aware of the amount of snow on the roof of your home or place of business.

• In wet, heavy snow conditions, please keep an extra close eye on children and pets when in the vicinity of sloped roofs designed to shed.

• Please ensure entrances and exits to your home or place of business are clear from snow and other debris. This allows first responders faster access into the building in the event of a medical emergency or fire.

• When driving around town, please transit slowly and give yourself enough room to stop, especially in icy or fresh snow conditions. Use caution when making turns, driving in parking lots, or pulling out of your driveway, as snow piles and berms often reduce visibility.

• City crews continue to remove snow from city streets and around community fire hydrants. Parents are asked to remind their children to avoid playing on or around heavy equipment or large snow piles.

• Please avoid parking on city streets during snow clearing operations.

• Mariners with vessels in the small boat harbor should check on their vessels daily to monitor snow levels and arrange for snow removal as needed.

For specifics regarding the City Building Snow Removal Plan, additional information, or questions, please contact the City’s Public Information Office at 907-834-3468, [email protected], or visit the City’s Facebook page.
