Police Investigate Early Morning Shooting at House Party

Today, San Leandro Police detectives are continuing their investigation into a shooting that left a man in critical condition, following a party held last night at a house in San Leandro’s Heron Bay neighborhood.

On Sunday morning at 1:00am, police were called to the 15600 block of Anchorage Ave. after neighborhood residents reported a loud party.  Responding officers located the house and estimated that there were approximately 50 people in attendance between the ages of 18-21.  Police later learned that the homeowners were out of town and the party, spread through social media, was being hosted by their adult son.

About 30 minutes after the initial call, officers were dispatched back to the residence after several residents called 911 to report gunshots coming from the party.  Responding officers found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds at the house.  Alameda County Fire and paramedic personnel responded to treat the victim, who was transported to a local trauma center for advanced care.

One of the responding officers saw a car speeding away from the neighborhood.  When he tried to stop the vehicle to investigate, it fled at a high rate of speed, leading officers in a pursuit into San Lorenzo, where it crashed on Via Alamitos.  The four people in the car, ages 16-20, fled on foot.  Three were quickly arrested by San Leandro Police officers, and the fourth was apprehended by Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies about an hour later.

The four are being held by San Leandro detectives on suspicion of their involvement in the shooting, which left the victim in critical condition.

Detectives have interviewed several witnesses from the party and are searching the neighborhood for surveillance video, which could provide critical evidence in the investigation.

“We still need to speak with everyone that attended the party,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “Any video surveillance or additional witnesses could be key in piecing together the series of events that led up to this tragic, senseless act of violence,” he said.

Police are not releasing the names of the victim or suspects at this time, as their investigation is continuing.  A motive for the shooting has not been determined.

Citizens play a critical role in creating a safe environment by observing and reporting any suspicious and criminal activity to the Police.  The San Leandro Police Department recommends that citizens do not participate in any direct verbal or physical involvement with suspicious persons or those who are committing crimes. The personal safety of the community is paramount. We encourage the San Leandro community to record the details of what they observe and to report those details to the Police.  This type of community involvement and partnership has proven to be a very effective crime prevention tool. Citizens act as the eyes and ears of the community first, and the extended eyes and ears of the San Leandro Police Department.
