“SEVERE TRAFFIC COLLISION IN NEWTON AREA”

Los Angeles- On January 13, 2017, at approximately 6:19 p.m., a severe injury vehicle traffic collision occurred on 50th Street and Avalon Blvd in Newton Area.

The collision occurred when the driver, a female in her 40’s, stopped and got out of her 2004 Chrysler Sebring for an unknown reason on 50th Street just east of Avalon Blvd. When the driver noticed her vehicle traveling in reverse, she attempted to re-enter the vehicle. However, she became trapped and was dragged for approximately 200 feet.  The vehicle continued in reverse in a westbound direction through the intersection of Avalon Blvd with her two children, ages 13 and 2 years old, still inside the car. At that point she was dislodged from the driver’s side door area and fell to the pavement.  While on the ground she was then run over by the left front tire.

The vehicle continued out of control and then struck a wooden utility pole.  The vehicle came to rest a short distance away and the children were able to safely get out of the vehicle.

The driver suffered severe head trauma and was taken to California Hospital Medical Center by paramedics from the Los Angeles City Fire Department.  She is listed in critical condition.  Her children were taken to UCLA Harbor Medical Center and were treated and released with minor injuries.

The cause of collision is still under investigation and is being investigated by Central Traffic Detectives.  Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Felix Padilla at Central Traffic Division Detectives at (213) 833-3713, or Central Traffic Division Watch Commander at (213) 388-3746.   During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (877-527-3247).  Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).  Tipsters may also contact Crime Stoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.”  Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts.
