2016 Crash Data Report - Driver inattention, failing to stop at red traffic signal major factor in serious crashes

An examination of crash data from South Brunswick roadways during 2016 show an increase in fatal crashes. Five people were killed in crashes on roadways this past year. The fatal crashes took place on the following dates;

January 1, 2016 - 13 year old girl died in two vehicle crash Route 1 / Deans Lane

April 16, 2016 - 26 year old man died in a single vehicle crash Route 535

June 16, 2016 - 65 year old woman died after being struck by vehicle Route 1 / Deans Lane

September 27, 2016 - 96 year old man died in two vehicle crash Route 535 / Route 32

November 8, 2016 - 29 year old male died in a crash with a SUV and a truck Route 1 / Raymond Road

The South Brunswick Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau conducted extensive investigations examining the factors involved in each crash. The most common factor in the crashes was disregarding a traffic signal. Traffic Sergeant Gary Holsten said, “Motorists need to avoid distractions while driving and stop at red traffic signals.” The total number of crashes on Township roadway remains consistent for the past several years at nearly 2,500. This year saw the highest number of fatalities in the past five years.

Chief Raymond Hayducka said, “As the roadways get more congested it is critical that drivers pay attention while driving. It only takes a split second to look away for disaster to happen. We are committed to improving the safety of our roadways.” Chief Hayducka outlined the comprehensive plan he has implemented the past several years to address traffic safety. The plan has three components - awareness, education, and enforcement. Police share the crash data so the public is aware of the dangers. Officers provide education in the schools and through the police department’s  community notification system. Officers work round the clock to address complaints and problem areas with enforcement efforts. “Working together we can all improve the safety of our roadways,” said Chief Hayducka.
