Don't Let the Grinch Steal Your Christmas - Remember Home and Travel Safety During the Holidays

Christmas vacations have started, or soon will be, and that means it is time to be extra mindful of home security and safety. Each year, the FBI reports a nationwide uptick in burglaries, especially home burglaries, with one recent year showing nearly 400,000 burglaries in November and December alone. Thieves look for clues of easy pickings so please don’t tip off a burglar of your plans or possessions.

*Make doubly sure doors and windows are locked, even if leaving home for just a short period. Deadbolt locks offer the best protection.
*Set your home alarm and keep the outside of your home well lit.
*When leaving home for an extended period, have neighbors gather mail and papers or have them held. Also ask someone to shovel the drive. Work with your neighbors to check homes.
*Put indoor and outdoor lights on automatic timers and leave a radio or television on so your house appears occupied.
*Although you want to show off your decorations, gifts should not be visible from windows as they offer a ready temptation to thieves. Close curtains and drapes so your presents are not visible from outside.
*Record the make, model, and serial numbers of electronics, firearms, and other items so if they are stolen they can possibly be tracked. Taking photographs of important purchases is also advised.
*Be aware that criminals may pose as package deliverers or charity solicitors. If in doubt, contribute only to recognized charities.
*While you may be excited about your holiday and travel plans, it is not wise to advertise these on Facebook and other social media sites.
*Dispose of gift packaging discreetly and avoid large boxes in your curbside trash pickup. Don't let your trash advertise what is inside your home.
*Be aware of fire hazards - candles, fireplaces, Christmas lights, and more.
*Holiday parties may be fun but make sure you don’t let guests drive drunk. Provide non-alcoholic alternatives, designate sober drivers, or offer to let guests stay if needed.
