Santa Claus is coming to town at the Compton Target Store Century Sheriff Station host “Heroes & Helpers” Program

Saturday, December 17, 2016, from 8am-10am, Target and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Century Station’s Youth Activities League (YAL), will host the Heroes & Helpers event to assist children purchase holiday gifts for their families. The Target store, located at 1621 South Alameda Street, Compton, will close down its doors to the public for two hours, so that 100 children may go on a shopping spree for free. During the in-store shopping event, the children are paired with sheriff’s deputies who will assist them in picking out holiday gifts for their families.

The Heroes & Helpers program fosters strong community relationships by pairing public safety officials with underprivileged youth to shop for the children's families during the holidays. This community giving and service event, is one way that Target Corporation gives back 5 percent of its profits to the communities it serves – which adds up to more than $4 million per week.

Captain Kerry A. Carter, Century Station, comments that over the years Century Station’s Youth Activities League has dedicated itself to the betterment of the communities it serves and one way of doing that is by enriching the lives our youth.  A big thank you for Target for their generosity as well as the men and women of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Century Station personnel who made this giveaway a possibility. Together we can and are “Making a Difference.”

The Century Sheriff’s Youth Activities League was created in 1997 by using the former Florence-Firestone Park Sheriff’s station and transforming the building from a law enforcement facility to a community safe-haven for children.

Over the course of years, this program has continued to grow and expand in its efforts to reach the youth in the community and show them a better path in life. This year also marks our fourth year providing an expanded summer program which serves over 500 children each day.

There are dozens of programs and activities that children can participate year round which include tutoring, a computer lab, martial arts, boxing, dance, sports, arts and crafts, and various field trips.

Century Youth Activities League is located at 7901 S. Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90001. For more information about the Century Youth Activities League program, call (323) 586-7250 or visit www.CenturyYAL.org

About the Youth Activities League:

There are 15 Youth Activities Leagues throughout Los Angeles County — and every one represents a safe haven. For some kids, the local Youth Activities League is a place to get some much-needed help with homework. For others, it’s a place to shoot some hoops or learn a new sport without fear of physical violence or becoming tangled up in many of the other negative distractions the streets have to offer.

For others, it’s literally a place to call home. http://sheriffsyouthfoundation.org/programs/youth-activities-league/
