HCSO: Harris County Jail Receives High Marks from Texas Commission on Jail Standards

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – Today, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office received its highest praise from the Texas Commission on Jail standards in years.

Every year the Harris County Jail undergoes a random inspection of its facilities and operations by the Texas Commission on Jails Standards. A team of five State inspectors spent five days evaluating the jail during the surprise inspection.

While the jail has passed its two most recent inspections, today’s review of the jail resulted in what State inspectors called an inspection, “as close to as perfect as possible.”

Two technical issues were resolved to inspectors’ satisfaction, and a request was submitted by the inspection team to resubmit the jail’s operational plans in 30-90 days.

During a Friday morning briefing, the inspection team noted that the quality of training now in place has resulted in more confident and capable staff, and that the “pulse of the jail was calm and content.” Areas inspected receiving perfect marks include the Health Services Division, booking and releasing, supervision, grievances and discipline, food services, inmate education/library, visitation and others.

Federal inspectors from the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility simultaneously conducted a three day audit of Harris County’s 287(g) program, and found, “no issues, no deficiencies, and no areas of concern.”
