Update to Suspected Mumps Case
In update to an earlier press release on Thursday, December 15, 2016, a suspected case of mumps in our area has been confirmed negative after laboratory testing.  No other suspected cases of mumps have been reported to Lincoln County Health Department.
Immunization is the best protection against the mumps virus and other vaccine-preventable diseases.  The CDC has reported a higher than usual number of cases of mumps for 2016.  Mumps virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or from touching objects that may have been contaminated.  Handwashing and covering sneezes and coughs can help stop the spread of illness.
The symptoms of mumps can include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swelling of the salivary glands located in front of each ear which makes the person look like they have swollen cheeks.
If you have additional questions or believe you have symptoms, please contact your health care provider or the Lincoln County Health Department at (636) 528-6117.
