Chemical Endangerment Arrest
(Etowah County, Alabama) An Altoona woman was arrested for chemical endangerment of a child, according to Sheriff Todd Entrekin.
"Stephanie Diane Burkhalter, 21, of Altoona, is charged with chemical endangerment of exposing a child to an environment in which controlled substances are ingested, produced or distributed, which is a felony,” investigator Brandi Fuller said.
Medics were dispatched to Burkhalter’s residence concerning a two year-old having difficulty breathing. She stated the child had been to the doctor’s office earlier in the day and received treatment. Burkhalter refused any further treatment for the child and left the toddler with a neighbor. Shortly thereafter, the child’s condition worsened and was rushed to the hospital by a neighbor.
Burkhalter later admitted the child had not been to a medical clinic but had ingested two Xanax.
Burkhalter was arrested and is being detained in the Etowah County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
Etowah County Department of Human Resources is also involved in this case.
