Safe Driving Tip from the El Cerrito Police Department Traffic Division

With the holiday shopping rush quickly approaching, the El Cerrito Police Department's Traffic Division would like to remind motorists to exercise caution and patience while driving. This is especially important when traffic congestion is heavy.

Intersections can be especially frustrating when there is heavy traffic. We've all been there when you're driving and you enter the intersection on a green light but suddenly find yourself stuck in the middle of the intersection when the signal light turns red. Not only is this embarrassing but it is also a violation of California law. California Vehicle Code section 22526(a) states in part that, "No driver of a vehicle shall enter an intersection or marked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or marked crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle driven without obstructing the through passage of vehicles from either side". This is known as the Anti-Gridlock Law.

Basically, if you can't make all the way through to the other side then don't enter the intersection. Let's all have a happy and safe holiday season and remember to be kind to others as we drive in El Cerrito and other areas.
