Goods for Guns Update Today at 11:30 AM
The” Goods for Guns” illegal and unwanted gun buyback program yielded unforeseen results that were beyond our expectations. The media is invited to an 11:30 AM press conference in the training center of the police department. At the press conference, the guns will be on display. The gun buyback program yielded the below results:
• Handguns-49
• Shot Guns- 46 (including two sawed-off)
• Rilfes-27
• Pellet/BB Rifles- 4
• 100’s of rounds of handgun, shotgun and rifle ammunition were
turned in.
The Goods for Guns initiative was very successful not only for the department, but for the Green Bay community. Below are the takeaways that we learned.
• Illegal/Dangerous guns were seized which people could have been arrested for. Specifically, the two sawed off shotguns.
• We seized unsafe guns out of people's houses which included a zip gun, a gun with a homemade handle or older guns which don’t appear that they would fire. Officers were told that the individuals did not trust these guns if they were fired. We saved countless injuries from occurring by removing these weapons from people’s homes.
• Overall, we removed the above firearms and 100’s of rounds of ammunition from the community preventing these guns from falling into the wrong hands.
• Due to the high number of people that this program helped, the GBPD will consider running this initiative again in 2017.
This program would not have been possible without the financial backing of the Brown County Crime Prevention Foundation. The foundation awarded GBPD a $2000 grant which was used to buypack these guns. No tax payer dollars were used. Due to the success of the program, the department used another $2000 of our crime prevention funds to cover the amount of guns that were being turned in.
