Stage 3 Water Emergency

Due to the industrial accident in Neodesha that occurred earlier today, out of an abundance of caution, the City of Independence has declared a Stage 3 water emergency until further notice. At 4 am Wednesday, November 23, 2016, the city water treatment plant will cease intake of water from the Verdigris River at which time the water conservation plan will begin and heavy users such as car washes and non-essential high volume commercial water uses will be shut down. After testing results, which we anticipate will be available tomorrow, the emergency will be lifted if testing comes back satisfactory.

If testing does not come back satisfactory, water usage will be limited to life-sustaining water use only, at which time all businesses that use water must be shut down. This includes all soda fountains, restaurants, delis, etc. We appreciate your cooperation in conserving water during this emergency and apologize for any inconvenience.
