Police Seek Public's Help in Finding Van Involved in Thursday's Shooting and Crash that Left Elderly Couple Hospitalized.

San Leandro Police detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in their on-going investigation of a shooting that left and elderly San Leandro couple hospitalized on Thursday afternoon, after they were hit head-on by one of two vehicles involved in a rolling gun battle.

Today, police are releasing a surveillance photo of a black Dodge Caravan that investigators believe is the vehicle that escaped Thursday afternoon, following the shootout and chase that began in the area of MacArthur Blvd. and Foothill Blvd., between the Dodge van and a Nissan Altima.  Police originally believed that the van may have been a compact SUV, but now, with additional surveillance video, have confirmed that the vehicle they are seeking is a Dodge Caravan.

“We need the public’s assistance in identifying this van and its occupants,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “There’s a possibility that the van was rented from a rental car agency. We are asking those companies to check their records for similar vehicles that are still rented out to customers or have been returned since Thursday’s shooting,” he said.

Police say that the husband and wife are still hospitalized, both with serious injuries.  The driver is remains in critical condition.

Today, investigators met with the Alameda County District Attorney, who filed several felony charges against the man who was driving the Nissan Altima that was responsible for the head-on crash with the elderly couple.  That suspect, a 33 year old Oakland resident, remains guarded by police in an area hospital, while he recovers from gunshot wounds sustained during the gun battle.  After his discharge from the hospital, the suspect will be transported to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, until his arraignment at a later date.

Police ask that anyone who may have information about the black, Dodge Caravan or the people that were in it when the shooting and chase occurred, to please call the San Leandro Police Department at (510) 577-2740.
