Police Investigate Rolling Gun Battle that Ends with Injury Car Crash

This afternoon, San Leandro Police responded to a shooting, and shortly thereafter, were sent to a related car crash with injuries near an elementary school.

At 12:30pm, police received 911 calls reporting a shooting in the area of MacArthur Blvd. near Interstate 580.  One minute later, police received additional 911 calls of a car crash that occurred in the 300 block of Dowling Blvd., about ½ block away from Washington Elementary School.

When officers arrived at the collision scene, they found two cars with major damage to them, one of which, a Nissan Altima, was determined to have been involved in the initial shooting.

Police found a man suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the yard of AB’s Preschool and Daycare Center across the street from the crash scene.  Police, who are continuing their investigation, are withholding the man’s identity, other than he was an adult.  He was transported by paramedics to an area hospital for treatment.

Police also located a dark-grey Toyota Prius partially on top of a parked car at the scene of the crash.  First responders found an elderly couple trapped inside.  Alameda County Fire personnel used the “jaws of life” to free the couple from severely damaged car, who were then taken to an area hospital for treatment.

“This was a horrible scene,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “The couple in the Prius are innocent victims.  They were just driving down the street when they were hit head-on by the Nissan Altima involved in rolling gun battle with others that got away.  This should never have happened,” he said.

At the hospital, police arrested the man from the Nissan Altima on suspicion of his involvement in the shooting, as well as reckless driving that resulted in serious injury to the innocent couple who were driving in the Prius.

Police are still interviewing witnesses, searching for surveillance video and trying to determine how and why this violent incident occurred in San Leandro this afternoon.  Police believe that the Nissan Altima and another unidentified vehicle began shooting at each other and chased one another through the city streets before the car crash occurred between the Altima and Prius.  The unidentified vehicle, with shooting suspect(s) inside, escaped and has not yet been located.

Due to the incidents and close proximity to both Washington and Roosevelt Elementary schools, police ordered both schools to be on a temporary lock-down for about 30 minutes.  The lock-down was lifted after officers determined that it was safe for the students and teachers to resume their day.

Police worked closely with San Leandro Unified School District administrators and commended their staff for their quick and appropriate actions.

Members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Criminalistics Lab still processing the collision scene for evidence, while San Leandro officers have canvassed the neighborhoods between MacArthur Blvd. and the crash scene for additional evidence.  Lt. Robert McManus stated that detectives will be working late into the night or early morning as they continue their investigation, hoping to identify the outstanding suspects and quickly bring them into custody.
