Police Seek Public's Assistance to Identify Burglars

San Leandro Police detectives are investigating a series of residential burglaries that began Friday morning in the Assumption Parrish and Bay-O-Vista neighborhoods.  Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects, who were captured on one victim’s surveillance camera system.

On Friday at 9:45am, police responded to a call of a residential burglary alarm in the 2100 block of Bradhoff Ave., in San Leandro’s Assumption Parrish neighborhood, finding that the residence had been burglarized.  They were able to view the home’s surveillance video system and learned that two suspects entered the rear yard through a side gate and entered the home through the rear sliding glass door.

The burglars searched the inside of the house, taking concealable items, before fleeing.  The video surveillance depicts the suspects as African-American males in their late teens to early 20s, who were both wearing hooded sweatshirts with the hoods covering their heads as they approached the house and jeans.  One suspect was holding a cellphone to his ear, while the other was wearing a backpack.  The video shows both suspects arriving in what police believe is a red, 4-door, Honda Civic that has oxidized paint on the roof of the car, with a white, California license plate.

Beginning at 8:50pm that evening, police responded to 4 residential burglaries in the Bay-O-Vista neighborhood that occurred in a 30-minute period.  In two of the burglaries, residents were inside of their homes when suspects smashed the rear, sliding glass doors of the homes.  Fortunately, for some reason, the burglars did not go into the homes where people were inside.

The Bay-O-Vista burglaries occurred in the 2200 block of Lakeview Dr., 1500 block of Regent Dr., 1800 block of Benedict Dr., and 1900 block of Marineview Dr.

In the two burglaries that occurred where no one was home, thieves stole small items of value, before fleeing.

“We need the public’s help in solving these crimes and preventing future ones from occurring.  If you see a suspicious car or person in your neighborhood, please call us and let us investigate.  We’d rather find out that they are there legitimately, rather than later learn that they burglarized a home or committed some other type of crime,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.

Police are asking anyone with video surveillance camera systems in the Bay-O-Vista neighborhood to view their videos from Friday evening between 7:00pm-10:00pm and report anything suspicious to the Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 577-3230.

Police recommend that residents take a proactive approach in preventing crime in residential neighborhoods.  Some of the best preventative measures include watching out for your neighbors and making your house look like someone is home, even if they aren’t.  This includes turning lights on, leaving radios on, and equipping your house with exterior, motion-sensor floodlights, which will illuminate people entering your yard, when they don’t belong there.  Police also stress the importance of calling them immediately if you see something suspicious, rather than wait to later find out that a crime was committed.

Citizens play a critical role in creating a safe environment by observing and reporting any suspicious or criminal activity to the police.  The San Leandro Police Department recommends that citizens do not participate in any direct verbal or physical involvement with suspicious persons or those engaged in the commission of crimes. Personal safety of our community is paramount.  We encourage the San Leandro community to record the details of what they observe and to report those details to the police.  This type of community involvement and partnership has proven to be a very effective crime prevention tool.  Citizens act as the eyes and ears of the community first, and the extended eyes and ears of the San Leandro Police Department.  Thank you for being a force-multiplier in our efforts to provide professional police services and safety to the community.
