Halloween Safety Tips
Halloween is an exciting time of year for children. To help make sure your children have a fun and safe holiday, here are a few tips.
Do not let your children trick-or-treat alone, use the buddy system. Two or more is always better than one. Plan a route in advance that you and your children are familiar with. This will help in the event you get separated from your children. Go even one step further, plan specific meet up locations throughout your route should you get separated. Take a picture of your child in and out of their costume, should they get lost and you require assistance from the police, this could help them locate your child.
Remain visible at all times. Tape or fasten reflective material to your child’s costume, candy bag or have them carry or wear a glow stick or flashlight. Don’t forget to always look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks whenever possible. It’s easier for you to move out of the path of a moving vehicle then it is for the vehicle to move for you. Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, when it’s not possible, walk on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Don’t forget to put comfortable shoes on your child as well.
Your child’s costume should fit well and be short so they do not trip on it. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure they can see out of it when walking. If you are painting your child’s face, test out the make up before Halloween to make sure they do not have an allergic reaction to it. If your child’s costume requires props, such as a knife or sword, make sure it is flexible so it will not hurt your child or anyone else. Most importantly, if your child is wearing a toy gun as part of their costume, please make sure it is colored with bright vibrant colors so it cannot be mistaken as a real gun.
At the end of the night, please make sure to check your children’s candy. Throw away any candy that is not commercially wrapped or that looks like it has been opened.
I hope these few tips help you and your children have a safe and memorable halloween.
