Advisory

Accidental Shooting

On September 8th, 2016 at about 12:45 pm, Kern County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a victim of a shooting at an apartment in the 2600 block of 25th Street West in Rosamond.

When deputies arrived they located a 14 year old male inside the apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The 14 year old male was unresponsive, and deputies began administering CPR until medical aid arrived. The 14 year old male was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Deputies detained two subjects who had been in the apartment when the shooting occurred, a 19 year old and 16 year old. Due to the circumstances, detectives responded and assumed the investigation. Detectives searched the apartment and located a shotgun inside the apartment. Both the 19 year old and the 16 year old were interviewed by detectives.

Based on information and evidence developed during the investigation, detectives determined the 14 year old had been handling the shotgun and the shotgun had accidentally discharged, striking the 14 year old in the chest.

The name of the decedent will be released by the Coroner’s Office. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death.
