Advisory

Voluntary evacuation recommended for homes in coastal Barnegat susceptible to storm flooding.

The Barnegat Police Department and Barnegat Office of Emergency Management are recommending that lagoon and bayfront area residents of Barnegat whose homes and properties are susceptible to flooding from nor'easters and tropical systems (Sandy, Jonas) voluntarily evacuate prior to Sunday afternoon. It is recommended that residents in these areas move vehicles to higher ground and secure all loose outdoor items.

Current forecasts indicate the potential for moderate to major flooding for certain coastal areas of Ocean County including the bayfront and back bay areas of Barnegat. Forecast flooding will likely make Bayshore Drive and East Bay Avenue impassable between the bathing beach and East Bay bridge.

While Governor Christie has declared a State of Emergency, there is no order for mandatory evacuations at this time. Should mandatory evacuations be ordered, a separate release and notice will be issued.
