Heat wave expected for the area Wednesday through Friday, Code Orange air quality alert in effect Wednesday

A heat wave will envelop the region beginning today and last through Friday. Temperatures will be in the lower to mid 90s with heat indices around 100 degrees.

A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect for the area today. This means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or lung diseases and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercising outdoors.

Here are some preparedness actions from the National Weather Service to beat the heat:

Take extra precaution when working or spending time outdoors. If possible, stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.

Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Drink plenty of water, even if you are not feeling thirsty. Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight and light colored clothes.

Children and pets should never be left unattended in a parked vehicle under any circumstance but most especially during hot weather. The interior of a vehicle can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The North Brunswick Library (880 Hermann Road) has been designated as a cooling station. Their hours today are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
