# JULY 4th – YOUR LOS ANGELES COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS ASK YOU TO ATTEND APPROVED FIREWORKS SHOWS

Each year on the Fourth of July, Los Angeles County Firefighters respond to fires that were ignited by the use of illegal fireworks. For those living in the Wildland Urban Interface and surrounding communities, this is no small threat. Estimates indicate that in California 1,900 wildland fires have already burned since January 1, – unusually high numbers for this time of year.

The need to staff extra Firefighters and equipment during the holiday weekend is a result of those who do not heed the warning and unintentionally start fires. When you start a fire you put lives and property at risk and there is always a threat to Firefighter safety during any fire fight.

YOUR Los Angeles County Firefighters ask you to attend approved fireworks shows.

FUN FACTS

• Sparklers are very dangerous because they can burn 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit – nearly twice the temperature of of live fire.

• Every 4th of July, Americans ignite about 175 million pounds of fireworks. That is equivalent to about 100,000 lightning bolts.

• Blue fireworks are the most difficult fireworks color to make. No one has found the perfect chemistry to make a bright blue color.

• The earliest recorded use of fireworks dates back to 200 B.C. in China.
