Police K-9 honored by local artist.

Earlier this month, he Ripon Police Department announced the news that one of its retired police K-9s, 13 year old “Topper” passed away. K-9-Handler Ofc. Bob Winget and K-9-Handler Ofc. Gordon West both shared the unique distinction of being partnered with Topper during his 7 years on the force. Topper was especially popular with elementary school students.

When local artist Richard Ennis, a Stockton resident, saw Toppers story and his official photograph he said to his wife Lauren, “I have to draw him.” After Richard’s labor of love was finished, he contacted the Ripon Police Department and he offered to donate the drawing to the department. Richard and his wife Lauren met with Ripon Police Chief Ed Ormonde earlier today and they presented the artwork to the department.

Among the officers who were present to thank Richard and Lauren was Detective Gordon West. Detective West was Topper’s K-9 handler and partner for 5 years. After Topper retired he lived with Det. West and his family until his passing. When Detective West saw the drawing of his beloved K-9 partner Topper he said, “The drawing really captured Toppers personality; especially with his goofy tongue hanging out!”
